The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite enables early warning of machinery problems and provides all levels of shipboard and shore-side personnel the information they need to make informed operations and maintenance decisions.

The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite technology is utilized today by the US Navy under the flagship name MELS (Maintenance Engineering Library Server) and is used to monitor various ship classes. Monitored machinery includes gas turbine, diesel propulsion and power generation systems. The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite is also used to monitor many auxiliary systems including air conditioning units, reverse osmosis and distilling plants, motors, pumps, and compressors. The years of experience gained on this equipment is immediately transferrable to a commercial fleet of ships, and ESRG understands and has adapted our software products to deal with varying machinery models and unique issues found in the marine industry such as limited connectivity.

Utilizing the OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite Technology, automated rules which continuously analyze a high pressure air compressor prevented an issue days before a catastrophic failure would have occurred. The 5th stage discharge pressure and temperature exhibited a degrading trend, and the subsequent assessment report instructed the crew to perform an inspection during the next available shutdown. Although the compressor was still operational, the inspection revealed 5th stage piston seal failure. This advanced warning enabled the crew to make preparations by ordering the required parts and materials and scheduling the maintenance during the next port visit.  Utilizing the OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite, the ship prevented an unexpected failure during an underway period, enabled the crew to plan accordingly for the machine outage, and prevented days of unexpected downtime.

ESRG assists the United States Navy with condition assessment for Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) equipment. This process began by equipping ships to collect engineering plant performance data continuously for use in a Condition-based Maintenance environment. Today, both shipboard and shore-based personnel can access the digitized performance data within the Maintenance Engineering Library Server (MELS) system via the World Wide Web. Access to this data enables the Navy to obtain unprecedented situation awareness of the health of their propulsion plants, power generators, and auxiliary equipment and deliver Integrated Performance Analysis Reports (IPAR) and Enterprise Performance Analysis Reports (EPAR) to the monitored fleet within 24 hours of receipt of the data. This unprecedented capability leverages the shipboard Integrated Condition Assessment System™ (ICAS) on each ship as well as ESRG’s centrally located rule and reporting engines.

Monitored equipment includes many different models of the following equipment:

Gas Turbine Propulsion Systems

Gas Turbine Generators

Main Propulsion Diesel Engines

Ships Service Diesel Generators

Reverse Osmosis Plants

ESRG’s OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite enables Machinery OEM’s to remotely monitor the health of assets under warranty or service agreement. The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite enables fleet wide analysis of machinery health and can provide early warning of design problems propagating throughout the install base. The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite can be utilized to track machinery run hours and load usage (capacity factor) on the install base to enable parts forecasting for inventory projections and control.

The OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite is utilized today to monitor air compressors, gas turbines, diesel engines, air conditioning units, and many other types of machinery.  ESRG’s experience with monitoring and diagnostics of steam plants, gas turbines, and nuclear power machinery enables our engineers to provide your design teams and service personnel the expertise needed to create diagnostic/prognostic rules and algorithms to ensure installed machinery is properly operated by the end user.

An example of how OstiaEdge™ can benefit an OEM is reflected in the following case study. A gas turbine reliability engineer was reviewing data related to an issue with lube oil pressure during startup of an installed gas turbine generator.  The issue had been flagged by automated rules monitoring the startup event. As part of his analysis, the engineer used the OstiaEdge™ Monitoring Suite to perform comparison of startup events across the entire fleet he was responsible for monitoring.  The comparison revealed that the lube oil pressure issue was occurring during startup events on multiple turbines. Further analysis with the OEM revealed that the problem was related to a design change and was present on every unit manufactured after a particular date. Individual asset monitoring would not have recognized this problem, and by analyzing the data with a fleet approach, the scale of the fleet wide problem became clear. Utilizing OstiaEdge™, the OEM could have pro-actively identified and corrected this problem before the customer presented it as a warranty issue.

The rising cost of employees has forced many companies to reduce onsite personnel and utilize corporate locations to perform analysis that has historically been done at the plant level.  This forces the onsite staff to focus on alarming and immediate actions which can consume nearly 100% of available time. Because of this, centralized engineering analysis is more important than ever to ensure plant reliability and availability does not suffer.

OstiaEdge™ CE provides companies the ability to create centralized rule sets to perform “fleet level” analysis enabling comparison of machine health from unit to unit or plant to plant. When desired, a vector based Anomaly Detection Engine (ADE) can be employed to help engineers and analysts predict when machine behavior strays from its normal operational envelope.  The ADE can be employed alone or in concert with other crisp rules to ensure machine behavior is monitored to your exact criteria. The flexibility of OstiaEdge™ CE allows the rule sets to be run on a schedule or upon receipt of the data as it is transferred from each asset or plant. OstiaEdge™ CE employs Open System Architecture for easy integration and interoperability through the use of MIMOSA OSA-EAI Web Services, with installed Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), SCADA systems, or centralized (corporate located) enterprise historian systems. The analytical results can be viewed utilizing the OstiaEdge™ Portal, or since the data is stored in a MIMOSA CRIS 3.2 compatible relational database, results can be accessed and displayed using many off the shelf reporting tools. The following are examples of the type of equipment for which OstiaEdge™ CE enables maintenance and condition based operations:

• OEM Fleet Monitoring: Turbines, Compressors, Pumps

• Power Gen: Steam, Wind, Combustion Turbines, BOP Assets

• Mobile Equipment: Rail Locomotives, Diesel Generators

• Shipboard Equipment: Propulsion and Power Gen Assets

About the OstiaEdge™ User Experience

The OstiaEdge™ Portal is a web based application that provides overall plant or equipment health status through quick view dashboards and includes drilldown capability to the trend data. The OstiaEdge™ Portal reports provide clear and immediate machinery health status visuals by displaying faults in green, yellow, or red depending on condition.  They enable users to drill into individual machine faults and subsequent trends of supporting evidence, thus providing a high level plant overview to detailed trends with a few simple mouse clicks.

OstiaEdge™ CE is a cross platform application, enabling use within either Windows or Linux operating environments. ESRG specializes in working with your plant and corporate IT departments to understand current capability and scales the system to meet your needs. ESRG’s relationship with IT also ensures all corporate security requirements are met.

Today’s machinery is heavily outfitted with sensors for use by control and alarm systems to protect from catastrophic failure. Most companies have installed historians and reliability tools to track and trend performance, reliability, and availability. With this level of technology available to plant personnel, it leads many to question why unexpected plant failures still occur.

ESRG believes one of the gaps within these tools is the lack of understanding of plant condition and operational states. ESRG offers OstiaEdge™ PE to integrate online and offline data sources and provide you the ability to “qualify” the data for various machine states. By utilizing OstiaEdge™ PE to understand what state your machine is in, you can then create unique rules and alarm setpoints for each state. OstiaEdge™ PE specializes in integrating data from your plant historian, distributed control system, vibration monitors, and other reliability applications, providing a 360 view of all data sources to detect and diagnose machinery failures and drive operational and maintenance decisions. OstiaEdge™ PE is a cross platform application, enabling use within either Windows or Linux Operating environments.

If you would like to learn more about how you can “qualify” your plant operational data and create your own rules and algorithms for every data source at your facility, CONTACT US today to learn more about OstiaEdge™ PE and start the journey to increased reliability.
